Guided Tour of the Exhibition Timeless Modernity – Hungarian Architectural Heritage in Shanghai

On Thursday, 15 January 2026, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the ELTE Confucius Institute organi-sed a guided visit to the exhibition Timeless Modernity – Hungarian Architectural Heritage in Shanghai at the China Cultural Centre in Budapest.
Organised by the cultural centre, the exhibition presents the legacy of Hungarian architects who worked in Shanghai during the 1930s. Their cultural and architectural heritage is showcased not only through photographs, but also through interactive digital displays.
More than 30 people attended the event, including members of staff of the ELTE Confucius Institute, led by Professor Imre Hamar, Director of the Institute, and Anna Csikó, Deputy Director. Participants also included students enrolled in the Institute’s arts courses and stu-dents of Chinese Studies at the Institute of East Asian Studies of ELTE’s Faculty of Humani-ties.
The guests were welcomed by Wang Rudong, Director of the China Cultural Centre in Buda-pest. This was followed by an introduction by Judit Éva Nagy, President of the Hungarian–Chinese Friendship Society, who presented the background to the preparation of the exhibiti-on and its main themes.
The professional guided tour was conducted by architect Péter Varga, a researcher of Gonda’s work and a doctoral candidate at Sapienza University of Rome. In his engaging presentation, he explored the professional and historical context of the exhibition materials and offered visi-tors a deeper insight into the work and legacy of Hungarian architects in Shanghai.
The programme was organised jointly by the China Cultural Centre in Budapest, the Hungari-an–Chinese Friendship Society and the ELTE Confucius Institute.
