A full house at this year's Confucius Day

2023. September 30.

According to tradition, Confucius, the eponym of our Institute, was born on 28 September 551 BC. Every year, Chinese cultural institutes around the world celebrate this event together. To mark the occasion, the ELTE Confucius Institute organised a programme of events to celebrate the anniversary. On Saturday, 30 September, Chinese culture enthusiasts filled the impressive Kodály Hall of ELTE.

To mark the occasion, we prepared a musical concert, a martial arts demonstration, scientific lectures and cultural programmes, and for the first time this year we organised a fashion show. Visitors, with the help of our Chinese teachers, could participate in a variety of activities introducing China, such as Chinese calligraphy or Chinese tea ceremony.

At the opening ceremony, Li Denggui, Chinese Director of the ELTE Confucius Institute, gave a keynote speech, saying that the cultural event coincided with the Autumn Mid-Autumn Day, so there was plenty to celebrate. The Director also stressed that it is always a pleasure to see so many people at Chinese cultural events, as it shows that Hungarian people are keenly interested in China.

The opening ceremony included a concert by students of the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, featuring both Hungarian and Chinese folk songs, followed by a Russian dance with the interpretation of the Bianhua Association, a tradition that goes back thousands of years, and a Hanfu fashion show and a presentation by Laura Torma, a student of the ELTE Doctoral School of Linguistics.

After the opening ceremony, Balázs Szigethy, PhD student in Sinology, introduced the audience to Chinese tea culture and ceremonies.
