ELTE Confucius Institute Makes History with Inaugural China Career Day

In a momentous occasion, the ELTE Confucius Institute achieved a significant milestone by hosting its first-ever China Career Day. On May 24, 2023, the Faculty Council Hall witnessed an impressive turnout as numerous visitors flocked to explore job opportunities offered by Chinese companies operating in Hungary. The event not only showcased employment prospects but also featured speeches, a musical concert, and cultural exchanges, further strengthening the bond between China and Hungary. With resounding success, plans are already underway to repeat this extraordinary event next year, marking a pivotal moment in the institute's history.

The Faculty Council Hall witnessed an impressive turnout on the morning of May 24th, with a remarkable number of attendees present. The Chinese job fair proved to be a niche event, attracting many visitors. Several Chinese companies operating in Hungary showcased job opportunities and provided informative materials at their booths. Additionally, many companies offered on-site interviews and internship positions.

The opening ceremony commenced with speeches followed by a captivating musical concert. During his address, Dávid Bartus, the Dean of the ELTE Faculty of Humanities, expressed his pride in the Confucius Institute, the ELTE Institute of East Asian Studies, and the Department of Chinese Language, which have become pivotal centers for Chinese language and cultural education in the country. The dean highlighted that over 200 students, at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels, are currently enrolled in Chinese language programs at ELTE.

Mr. Liu Bo, the Minister-Counsellor of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Hungary, briefly outlined the fruitful economic and trade cooperation between China and Hungary. He wished all participants success in finding their ideal positions at the job fair, based on their professional competence, international motivation, and confident Chinese language skills.

Prof. Dr. Imre Hamar, Vice-Rector, Head of the Department of Chinese Language, and Director of the ELTE Confucius Institute, emphasized the department's increasing focus on modern China. Responding to the needs of students, he expressed his commitment to providing more opportunities for them to develop their professional competences. The career day was deemed a pivotal event to assist students in securing employment in the labor market.

Li Kexin, CEO of the Bank of China, expressed his delight in the job fair, which not only serves as an excellent recruitment platform but also offers entrepreneurs an opportunity to engage with ELTE students and learn more about Hungarian history and culture. Such events exemplify the creation of stable economic and cultural exchanges, fostering friendly relations between the two countries. The CEO introduced the Bank of China and encouraged the audience to consider joining the financial institution.

Lu Bo, Director of China Railway Hungary Co., Ltd., introduced the company and invited the audience to explore the job opportunities available at this esteemed Chinese organization. He emphasized that while job creation is essential, cultural exchange between the two countries is equally as important. He expressed satisfaction that Chinese Railways and ELTE signed a cooperation agreement in March of this year, working together towards the noble goal of strengthening Sino–Hungarian cultural exchange.

The opening ceremony concluded with a captivating concert performed by exchange students from the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music in China, who are currently studying at ELTE's Faculty of Music. This musical gesture of Sino–Hungarian friendship delighted the audience, comprising Chinese and Hungarian attendees.


Given the tremendous success of the event, plans are underway to hold it again next year.
