The Confucius Institute at ELTE University Held a Lecture on "The Difference Between Chinese and Japanese Painting"

2022. December 16.

An online lecture titled "The Difference Between Chinese and Japanese Painting" was held by the Confucius Institute at ELTE University on December 16th at 17:00 local time. The lecture was given by Mr. Janisz Horváth, a famous Hungarian painter and art teacher at ELTE Confucius Institute, and moderated by Ms. Enikő Gájász, head of cultural activities at ELTE Confucius Institute.

Online Lecture

The lecture began with a presentation of modern Chinese and Japanese paintings, highlighting their commonalities. Modern Chinese and Japanese paintings are influenced by classical Chinese painting art, which draws inspiration mostly from natural scenes, including flowers, birds, fish, and insects, and most often uses ink coloring techniques. Meanwhile, Chinese and Japanese modern paintings are also influenced by Western painting methods, including Western brushwork.

Japanese Paintings

In the following lecture, the differences between Chinese and Japanese modern art were discussed. While Japanese painting emphasizes "form," depicting fish scales and water lines in great detail, Chinese painting emphasizes "meaning," creating images that are dynamic and leap off the page with only a few strokes. According to Mr. Janisz Horváth, Chinese painting is not as easy to emulate as it appears, and a lot must be learned before attempting to execute a painting.

Chinese Painting Works

This lecture provided an overview of the differences between Chinese and Japanese paintings and typical Chinese and Japanese modern paintings, explained the outstanding features of Chinese painting. It also provided an opportunity for the Hungarian public to explore Chinese painting in greater depth.
