Lecture by Levente Horváth: Chinese Geopolitical Thinking

2022. October 24.

Chinese Geopolitical Thinking (A kínai geopolitikai gondolkodás) is the title of a new book by Levente Horváth, the director of John von Neumann University’s (Neumann János Egyetem) Euro-Asian Department. His work presents the complex thinking behind China’s geopolitical strategies, including its well-known, new One Belt One Road initiative.

Mr. Horváth held a lecture on October 14 at the ELTE Confucius Institute where he presented his book. The large Kodály Hall of ELTE was nearly full of participants.

During the lecture, Mr. Horváth discussed the fast-developing nature of Asian cultures. Moreover, he has tried to figure out how we can understand China’s way of thinking, and to do so he said, “the best way of understand their thinking is to read and study their culture.”

China’s new One Belt One Road initiative shows how China wants to open up to foreign countries by its developing trade and mutual relationships with more than 60 countries.

Dr. Horváth Levente

China prefers peace to war. It thinks that a country cannot win by waging war. Rather, a country can gain much more by peaceful means and by fostering mutual relationships. We can find this theory even in ancient Chinese works, such as Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, which is 2500 years old.

Ancient Chinese philosophical texts, including the work of Confucius, can always be seen on the shelves of China’s current leaders. Thus, by understanding China’s culture, we can better understand China.
