Confucius Day

2022. September 24.

Every year on September 29, Chinese cultural institutes around the world officially commemorate the anniversary of Confucius' birth by reflecting on his teachings and celebrating Chinese culture through songs, dances, martial arts, calligraphy, and games.

This year, the Confucius Institute at Eötvös Loránd University celebrated Confucius Day on Saturday, September 24, with an extensive and educational cultural program.

The event started with some words from the Chinese Director of the ELTE Confucius Institute Li Denggui and was followed by a concert from the ELTE BTK Art Mediator and Music Institute, as well as a lion dance and Kungfu and sword performances.

After the opening ceremony, a range of different cultural programs were available for all attendants, ranging from calligraphy, Chinese paper cutting, and Beijing Opera mask coloring to traditional and educational board games and a table tennis tournament between teachers and students. Through these activities, attendants could learn various traditional aspects of Chinese culture while actively participating in the celebration of Confucius Day.

Additionally, the event featured lectures by István Havadi (“Representation of Confucius in classical Chinese painting”) and Gábor Bakos (“The sights of Beijing, the Temple of Confucius in Beijing”).

Confucius was China's greatest philosopher, a teacher, and the founding father of education; he loved arts and dedicated his life to teaching them. His goal was to preserve Chinese culture, and through celebrations like this one, the ELTE Confucius Institute promotes Chinese culture and generates interest not only in the language but also in the culture itself.
