Chinese and Japanese design (Lecture by Janisz Horvath)

2023. March 17.

Chinese and Japanese design Janisz Horváth, a senior art instructor, typographer, and calligrapher at the ELTE Confucius Institute, delivered a lecture on graphic design in Japan and China on Friday, March 17, 2023.

The presentation focused on Japanese and Chinese posters, including exhibition, political, and film, and also book covers. The lecturer, Janisz Horváth, who is also a calligrapher, discussed the characters on the posters and how their styles reflect the mood of their respective films. For instance, in a horror film, the characters may resemble a knife’s edge.

He also emphasized the importance of community representation and how it is highlighted in images, as seen in the Chinese Olympics poster.

Many environmental posters were presented, with the most expressive displaying the three characters for "forest," "grove," and "tree," followed by a symbol resembling the number 10, which actually refers to a cross, not a character.

Both Japanese and Chinese posters have a connection to classical art, with Japanese posters featuring the classical sea and fish, while Chinese posters showcase bird and flower paintings. The speaker also discussed magazines, which he found to be condensed and to efficiently use space, with some pages having large blank spaces and minimal text.
