Professor Dr. Imre Hamar was invited to speak at the All China Chinese Language Teachers Association 2023 Annual Conference

On February 25, 2023, he presented on "The Development of Chinese Language Teaching in Hungary and the Association of Chinese Language Teachers in Central and Eastern Europe" at the All England Chinese Language Teachers Association's (AECLA) Annual Conference in London. As ELTE’s Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Head of the ELTE’s Department of Chinese Studies, and Director of the ELTE Confucius Institute, Dr. Hamar provided a comprehensive overview of the history and current status of Chinese language teaching at ELTE.

During his presentation, Dr. Hamar shared the evolution of ELTE’s Department of Chinese Studies, from the teaching of ancient Chinese to the teaching of modern Chinese and the translation of literary works. He also presented the university's undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs, including the milestones achieved and new opportunities for the development of Chinese language learning. Dr. Hamar also highlighted the ELTE Confucius Institute's achievements, including receiving the Model Confucius Institute and Outstanding Chinese Language Examination Centre awards multiple times. He also shared the example of the Central and Eastern European Regional Teacher Training Centre, established by ELTE, which has provided 10 training courses for over 500 participants. These training courses have helped Chinese language teachers in Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe to improve their teaching methods and provide higher quality education.

Additionally, Dr. Hamar mentioned the five-volume Chinese Language Book for Hungarians, developed by experts in ELTE’s Department of Chinese Studies, as a unique resource that complements the English-language textbooks used to teach Chinese in Hungary. He also discussed his experience in teaching and leadership, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with Chinese teachers in Europe to improve teaching methods, develop new teaching materials, and promote cultural heritage.

A sinológus kitért arra is, hogy az egyetemen zajló hatékony kooperációnak köszönhetően, az angolnyelvű nyelvkönyveken túl, a kínai tanszéken oktató neves szakemberek által kidolgozott öt kötetes Kínai nyelvkönyv magyaroknak című kiadványt is használják a kínai nyelv tanítására. A könyvsorozat hiánypótló abban a tekintetben, hogy a legtöbb magyarországi gimnáziumban, felsőoktatási intézetekben sokáig csak angol nyelven voltak elérhetőek a kínai tankönyvek.

The ELTE Confucius Institute, established 16 years ago, has worked closely with Chinese educational institutions, associations, and Confucius Institutes in Hungary and other European countries. This collaboration has been fruitful, allowing institutions to learn from each other's strengths and develop complementary skills through mutual support and guidance.

Overall, Dr. Hamar's presentation highlighted the success and future potential of Chinese language teaching and cultural exchange in Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe.
