Painting and aesthetics of the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasty period

2022. November 25.

István Havadi-Nagy held a lecture on painting and aesthetics of the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasty period.

István Havadi-Nagy is a philosopher and a retired associate professor. Havadi explained that the Tang Dynasty (618–907) was the first golden age of Chinese painting, while the artists of the Five Dynasties period (907–960) created the two basic styles of Chinese landscape painting.

Havadi’s lecture had two parts. In the first part, he talked about the art of the Tang Dynasty and specifically about the artist Gu Kaizhi. He also told the famous legend of painter Zhang Sinchao. According to the legend, the painter didn’t want to paint the eyes of a dragon that he had already depicted on his canvas, because he was afraid that the painting may come alive. In the end, he painted the eyes, and the dragon flew out of the canvas and away.

The lecturer talked about other important painters, such as Han Gan and Han Hwang, and about their representations of horses and cows. He showed the paintings of Wu Daozi, Zhang Xuan and Zhou Fang and their famous women figures. Finally, the landscape paintings of Li Zhaodao were presented.

In the second half of the lecture, the Five Dynasties period’s painters were presented, including the great landscape painter Jing Hao and Guanxiu, who painted religious figures.

The visual demonstration of the famous paintings helped the audience to understand the aesthetics of Chinese painting during this period.
